Side hustle, blog business, dream career. Not sure if it’s time to give up on a goal? Some days you may still have that spark to keep pushing through. But most days, you may feel like it’s just not worth the time and energy. So how do you know when it’s time to give up?
The last big thing I gave up on…
As a yoga teacher and Reiki Master, there are times when I find myself faced with a lot of cognitive dissonance. It’s not always easy to take the high road when people are being passive aggressive or downright hostile.
I’ve definitely had my moments of throwing in the towel. Like when I quit my job without a Plan B to travel the world. Yes, I gave myself permission to “give up” the corporate life to go on an Eat, Pray and Love journey.
It was scary living on my emergency fund and not having another job lined up. It was also kind of sad to leave behind an 8 year career that was once a dream job.
Before resigning, I was dealing with office politics on a daily basis. It became a hostile work environment where I sometimes gave in to the negativity. To be honest, sometimes it felt better and easier to be “non-spiritual”.
The fact is, in any profession, there are just going to be haters that exist. Or people that simply don’t know they are crossing boundaries. But you have the choice to set energetic boundaries with them.
Fellow goal diggers, you are not alone.
Big goals are not for the faint of heart. I’m totally with you when you feel like cussing out those online trolls or writing back to a mean email giving a piece of your mind.
During these times, I found it best to go to my outlet: blogging, walking, practicing yoga, and spending time in nature. Rather than getting caught up in the hateration, I practice shifting my focus back to “why” I’m doing what I’m doing.
My “why” is helping people achieve financial freedom so that they don’t feel trapped and suffocated the way I did during my last few years at my 9-5 job. What’s your “why”? Here’s how to get clear on your “why”, or soul purpose.
It’s ok if your values changed!
Over time, different things become more of a priority and that’s totally normal. In my 20’s, I valued traveling the world...a lot. My last career allowed me to travel all over the globe and stay at some fancy hotels.
But over time, traveling became less of a priority. I still enjoy traveling but prefer to live in the same location with more of a daily routine.
As my values changed, so did the alignment with my soul.
When I started my blog business, I felt in complete alignment with my soul purpose. But as with any career path, there are pros and cons.
When encountering difficult personalities as an empath, the emotional rollercoaster ride can certainly be draining. The realities of being an entrepreneur aren’t always show cased on Instagram or Pinterest.
Giving up versus detaching.
When manifesting goals, the Law of Detachment can do a lot of the heavy lifting for us. The moment we detach from how we want an outcome to turn out is the moment Universe can start getting to work.
Part of co-creating with the Universe requires active allowance. I’m not talking about patiently waiting around for something to happen. But rather actively allowing the Universe to do its part in configuring what is not in your control.
Inspired action is not doing “busy work.”
There’s a difference between doing “busy work” to figure out how to achieve your goals. That’s when we end up getting in the way of our own manifesting. Why not take a more direct path by allowing the Universe to guide you along the way?
When you actively allow, you are being open to receive signs, symbols and synchronicities from the Universe. These messages can save you a ton of time by guiding you towards the next steps.
Start practicing the Law of Detachment.
When you detach from a particular outcome, you create space to receive guidance from the Universe. You also are better able to shift your focus from anxious thoughts to faith.
In turn, this creates space for positive energy flow as you align your energy to a higher vibration.
What does the Universe actually do when you align your energy to a higher vibration? A whole lot of the behind the scenes stuff from aligning the timing of the dream job to preparing that soul mate to enter into your life.
Without being able to see the behind the scenes stuff, it’s hard to release control to the Universe. I totally get it.
Thinking of giving up on your dream to become an entrepreneur?
Only you can be the one to determine when it’s time to let go, detach or move on. Below are some of the issues I’ve encountered over the years running my business.
By sharing some of these difficult encounters, my hope for you is that you are not swayed by bumps along the road. Keep on doing what inspires you!
1. Refund, please?
I once received an email from a customer two days after she made her purchase. In her email, she stated that she did not receive the online course and realized that she simply did not have time to complete the course “even if she did receive it”.
Unfortunately, she did not realize that our email marketing system tracks the exact time and date that she opened the course...and downloaded ALL the modules.
How did I respond? I could have emailed her a screenshot of our records indicating the receipt of the course and her follow-on actions.
But I simply referred her to our refund policy, which simply stated no refunds. There was no need to go back and forth on calling her out on a lie. It just wasn’t worth my time and energy.
2. Contact me, now!
Christmas and New Years is not always a joyous times for people. There could be a lot of family drama, breakups, and so forth during this time of the year.
On New Year’s Day, I received a message on FaceBook from a complete stranger. In the longest private message I’ve ever received on FaceBook, she described her frustrations with her personal life and asked me to call or email her immediately.
She was going through a tough time and wanted to chat about her situation because she was upset. She provided her phone number and email address stating that she understood if I reached out to her after the holidays.
How did I respond? I took that as an indication to reset my privacy settings.
3. Vendors that enable dishonest customers.
Once a customer purchased an online course from my first website. After completing the course, she claimed it was an unauthorized purchase.
So she submitted a claim for a full refund to PayPal over a month later. I sent PayPal the screenshots of the timestamps of each module that she opened and downloaded...which was ALL the modules.
Yet, PayPal refunded her in full. Just to be clear, it's not about the money but about the principle. I thought about giving up on submitting a rebuttal. But I'm not ok with dishonesty.
To make matters worse, the timing of the event happened during my vacation. It really put a damper on the travel and stress levels were definitely not high throughout the process.
It's times like these that I want to give up on my business and being a lightworker all together. Can’t I just enjoy a week off?
As a side note, if this ever happens to you as a business owner, PayPal can be a little finicky with their decision making process. I've found that if I attach the paid invoice and write less of an explanation, PayPal usually makes a fair decision.
Do the pros outweigh the cons?
When it comes to blogging, here’s why I know it’s not time to give up. There are definitely more positives that come from helping people through the online space.
At the end of the day, the good customers are so much more worthwhile in helping than all the dishonest ones. And I know I have a lot of people that I can help through my website.
In hindsight, I can’t imagine giving up just because of a few dishonest customers and enabling vendors. Otherwise, I would have never been able to help the honest ones!
If you have been dealing with difficult people, I know how frustrating it can be. Fortunately, there are a lot more good that can come out of challenging situations. There’s a silver lining to every challenge.
This one taught me to allow the Universe to take care of it by surrendering. Also, I learned how to better trust the messages from the Universe by tapping into my intuition.
There’s no need to waste any more time and energy on negativity. Rather, trust that the truth will always prevail in some form or another.
When the going gets rough, it’s easy to throw in the towel so that we don’t have to deal with all that heavy energy. But it’s during times of darkness that we have the opportunity to hold the light for others. And that is priceless when it comes to personal growth.
