It can take a lot of work keeping up to speed with Pinterest algorithms. Through trial and error, I've found a few Pinterest tricks that have helped boost website traffic time and time again...even when algorithms change. Before going over my top 6 Pinterest tricks, let's get the basics squared away first.
Pinterest is a visual search engine.
Your pins are shown to a variety of people, not just your followers. Furthermore, you get credit when other people pin your pins, and *those repins* get engagement (which has nothing to do with your own followers).
Overall engagement matters, not just follower engagement.
There are different factors in which your pins have a chance to go viral. For example, fresh pins get repins from hashtags and your Pinterest selected feed.
The pins that go viral within the first few days of posting won't get out of the box if your followers do not engage with the content.
Those same pins will get a second opportunity to go viral after a month or so when they start showing up in search.
At that point, the pin will climb the ranks or plummet down the page based on user engagement metrics from those who actively searched for related material.
So what else can you do other than create eye catching pins to entice people to click or repin?
Oh where to even begin! Let's start with the basics to make sure you are setting your business account up for success.
1. Optimize keywords
Pinterest is more of a search engine than a social media platform. Many users will probably say they put their search term in the search bar and browse and engage with what shows up.
Thus, it's important to SEO optimize your boards, pin description, titles, etc. using keywords that are curated for your niche.
Focus on making sure your pins have a call-to-action (CTA) such as "Find out more here" or "Click for more info". 3. Hashtags only in pin descriptions.
In addition to using relevant hashtags, the placement of the hashtags matter.
Hashtags in account descriptions, board titles, board descriptions or profile names aren't clickable.
The only place you can click and search hashtags are in a Pin's description.
4. Reevaluate your group boards and join new ones.
Group boards are still a good way to increase your reach on Pinterest. Especially if you are just starting out or recently re-branded, your pins can be seen by a whole new audience.
But joining boards just because they have a ton of followers, even if the topic is no longer your niche is a no-no. So take a step back to reeval all your group boards. This includes reviewing the board owner’s followers and collaborators.
5. Block bots and spammers. Bots and spammers can be the worst. These are "robots" and salesy accounts that don't engage with your pins.
Why does engagement matter? Say you had 1,000 disengaged followers. This may hurt your stats compared to having 100 engaged followers.
After all, the first signs of user engagement that Pinterest picks up on is the engagement of your followers. The early life of your pins is dictated by the way your followers interact with your pin. If those engagement metrics are not good, your pin will not go viral unless there is significant search demand and your pin performs well in its future pool. 6. Plural vs singular search terms.
Specifically, key words ending with s or without (plural or singular). For example, #pinteresttip versus #pinteresttipS Singular and plural are not interchangeable when it comes to hashtags on Pinterest. So use both if you have two images on the same blog post. Also consider other popular variations such as words that end in "-ing".
