5 Ways to Promote an Affiliate Product Authentically

Updated: Sep 15, 2019

Trying to promote an affiliate product without sounding salesy? I stayed away from affiliate marketing for a long time because I just don’t enjoy selling.

The act of promoting something just isn’t enjoyable to me. But I soon learned that affiliate marketing isn’t about being salesy. In fact, being salesy can actually repel readers.

Setting yourself apart is not hard.

There’s a lot of noise in the online space. A lot of people think it is hard to stand out with so many people doing something similar. But these days, it’s actually simple to stand out from the crowd more than ever.

Being authentic in your blog, videos, social media posts is key to standing out. We are all unique in our own way for a reason. But it’s easy to get caught up in the hype and start following the style of others.

Speak your truth.

If you find yourself feeling less and less authentic, take a step back to reset. Are you speaking your truth? Do you truly stand behind the product you are promoting?

I’ve turned down several affiliate programs in the past. If I do not believe in the product or service, I just won’t be able to stand behind it. Readers can sense it which leads to no sales.

Add value.

Adding genuine value is key when it comes to successfully promoting affiliate products. It's important to think through how you will promote your affiliate links. You don't want to bore your audience or come across as a pushy advertisement.

At the end of the day, it's not about just inserting affiliate links on your website everywhere. There are many different ways to promote an affiliate product. But you don’t have to do it all! Choose the promotion styles that resonate most with you.

Different strokes for different folks.

Below are five different ways to promote an affiliate product. Different strategies and may appeal to different readers.

This can help further the reach of your affiliate promotion. For example, a product review may resonate with some of your readers whereas others may prefer a tutorial.

At the end of the day, there are many reasons for why you would want to promote an affiliate product in more than just one way.

Here are some ways that you can promote an affiliate product:

1. Opt-in

In your opt-in, you can mention your affiliate product. Your opt-in does not have to focus solely on the affiliate product. For instance, say you are promoting a specific blender for your affiliate product. Your opt-in could be a unique recipe in which you mention the blender to use during meal prep.

2. “How to”

If a reader is interested in a product, make it easy for them to decide on their purchase by writing a “how to” tutorial. If blogging isn’t your thing, this can be done in a video format too.

Blog post or video, be sure to break down the steps in the simplest form possible when teaching how to use the product. Here is an example of a "how to" blog on creating a 6-figure online business leading to an affiliate product.

3. Review

When reviewing an affiliate product on your website, be sure to include the pros and cons. Covering the cons may seem counter intuitive but it actually builds trust with readers. Another way to review a product is comparing the product to a similar product you’ve used in the past. For instance, I wrote this post on why I switched from using WordPress to Wix.

4. Resource page

If you haven’t already, include a resource page on your website. This page can list all the affiliate products you recommend. Include a short description of the product and a few lines on why you recommend it. Here is an example of my resource page.

5. Social media post

Pinterest: Create a pin for all four of the above in order to bring readers to your product. This includes your opt-in, “how to” blog post (or video), review and resource page.

Twitter: Tweet a short and sweet message to your followers about why you enjoy the product. Note, Twitter doesn’t allow any third parties to insert paid tweets into a timeline on any service that leverages the Twitter API.

Facebook: On your FaceBook page, provide a short intro to your “how to” blog post and/or video. Then, share the link to the blog and/or video for readers to continue reading. Be sure to check the most up-to-date guidelines for sharing direct affiliate links on FaceBook.

Instagram: Similar to Facebook, in the comments section, provide a short intro to your “how to” blog. Then, share the link to the rest of the blog post for readers who are interested to continue reading.
