Can you really make money blogging while you sleep? How about six figures? How about over six figures each month without millions of views? Yes, yes and yes.
Over the years, I tried different ways to monetize my blog. I sold online courses, e-books, and did one to one consulting. Through those offers, I was able to cover my basic expenses, but nothing more.
It felt like I hit a glass ceiling with my business. No matter how much I tried, I was not making enough to be able to leave my 9-5. But I didn’t want to give up on being my #ladyboss dreams just yet.
I thought I knew everything about creating a profitable online business. After all, my blog was profitable in less than a year of putting up my website.
But there was something missing if I still couldn’t leave my 9-5 on the income I was earning.
The missing piece? Affiliate marketing.
I came across Making Sense of Cents, a blog that covers affiliate marketing strategies. After hearing a few podcast interviews of the author Michelle, I figured what do I have to lose.
Michelle earns over six figures a month on her blog. Last month, she made $104,065 to be exact. She makes over $50,000 a month just through affiliate marketing!
After taking the course, I started applying different strategies that resonated most with me. I wanted to do what felt most authentic. For instance, I’m not excited about Twitter, so I didn’t use those particular social media strategies.
Soon I was noticing a gradual and consistent increase in my monthly revenue. Through all the trial and error, I can say with confidence that affiliate marketing is the way to go!
With hindsight being 20/20, here are three things I wish knew sooner do to build a more profitable business.
1. Apply the 80/20 rule.
This isn’t a rule from Michele’s affiliate marketing course but she does emphasize the importance of building trust.
So I like to apply the the Pareto Principle. The rule suggests that 20 percent of my activities will account for 80 percent of my results.
There is a lot of noise out there, to stand out, the key is to consistently add value.
About 80% of the time, I am focused on adding valuable content. That means, in most of my social media posts and email newsletters, I do not promote a product or service.
It’s more important to build trust than to sell, sell, sell. Plus, that gets exhausting and don’t get me started on dealing with the internet trolls out there.
2. Would my picky Mom like it?
My mom and I clash...like a lot. She can be super critical about the littlest things. But I love her to death.
I buy products and services for her all the time online because she isn’t internet savvy. If I don’t recommend something, I won’t buy it for her.
Before I write a review about any product or service, I ask myself if I would recommend it to my mom. I have to truly believe in it in order to review it.
Readers can sense the energy.
If I haven’t tried a product or service, it’s very hard to write anything positive (or negative about it). It comes through in my writing too. Not only does it take ten times longer to review the product or service, but it just doesn’t appeal to readers.

3. Include the cons.
When I do come across something that I would highly recommend, I’m write not only about the pros, but also the cons that I may have experienced.
I want readers to know the whole picture. Skipping over the negative aspects of products or services can result in lost trust.
It takes time to build the trust with readers. Plus, I want Not A Bond Girl to be in the game for the long haul!
So I think about how the affiliate offer aligns with my message and brand. If the product doesn't align with my message, then I don’t want to be wasting my time promoting it.
Building a profitable blog is totally doable even without millions of views.
In Michele’s affiliate marketing course, it may come across as simple, but it definitely takes time and effort. Though the course took me a weekend to get through, I continue to refer back to the content to gain different insights.
Many bloggers like me skip over affiliate marketing. I overlooked affiliate marketing because I didn't want to come across salesy.
Also, I was told by a previous business coach that it's a waste of time because she tried affiliate marketing and it didn’t work for her. In her experience, she made only $500 per month at most. So I closed the door on affiliate marketing for several years.
Stop seething at your cubicle.
Through Michelle’s course, I learned that I was leaving money on the table. In reality, it was lot of passive income.
If you are feeling stuck in your business, trust me, I know how you feel. When I thought I tried everything possible under the sun, I thought it was a sign to give up. And due to that, I was still seething at a cubicle.
Change your strategy, change your business, change your life.
Michelle earns over $50,000 a month through affiliate marketing. In her course, she shares exact steps she’s taken to earn over $300,000 from a single blog post. Yeperz, it can really just takes one blog post.
The affiliate marketing course also covers great Pinterest and Facebook marketing strategies...after all she does have over 100K followers on Pinterest! Most importantly, she covers the latest affiliate marketing disclosure rules needed on the website, social media and so forth.
