Career Pivot: How to Build Your Social Capital

Time for a career pivot? One way to help your career transition is to increase your social capital. What exactly does social capital mean? Social capital has several interpretations. In this case, we are referring to social relations with expected returns in the workplace.

Social Capital versus Social Currency

Social currency refers to resources from being in social networks and communities, both on and offline. Basically, it is a way to understand the value businesses add to customers.

The concept derives from Pierre Bourdieu's social capital theory. Social capital relates to increasing your sense of community.

Doing so increases access to information and knowledge, helping to form your identity, and providing status and recognition. Social capital is formed by values and attitudes which influence interactions.

Building your social capital is a great way to grow personally and professionally.

As your social capital increases, so does your human capital (knowledge, experiences, and skillsets). After all, many times the difference between career success and failure can come down to who and what you know.

So how do you build your social capital both on and offline? By developing meaningful connections with those ahead of you.

Having been on both sides of the one being asked and the one asking, it can be beneficial for both parties when the networking is done right.

Ready to leave the corporate world? Then it's time to get serious about building up your social capital.

Maybe you outgrew your career, want to start a business or just take a year off. But right now, you don't know up from down. I get it. In the midst of office politics and frustrations, it's hard to figure out the next step.

I was able to quit Corporate for good once I got my finances in order through simple personal finance strategies.

I’m going to be sharing these tips on how I was able to create multiple income streams from investments and side hustles. From money mindset tips to simple investment strategies, I got you covered.

In addition to blogging on, I also enjoy teaching yoga and Reiki. But I wasn’t always a yogi or Reiki Master.

For most of my professional life, I worked in the public and private sector.

Over time, I burned out from office politics and being in a cubicle all day. But I did enjoy traveling the world and meeting a ton of amazing people.

Towards the end of my corporate life, I got my certification at yoga teacher training and later became a Reiki Master too. I needed an outlet for dealing with crazy clients, passive aggressive coworkers and micromanaging bosses.

It got so bad at work that I quit without a Plan B lined up. Multiple times!

Yep, I literally went into work one day and said I’m out. Another time, I tried being a little more strategic but I just couldn’t take another day working for people that I didn’t respect.

That was the start of my journey to financial independence retire early, also known as FIRE. I wanted to reach a point in my finances where work became optional.

It was a wild ride to FIRE. But by my mid-30's, I did it! There were several times when the emergency fund came in handy.

Emergency Fund, aka F-You Money

In light of the #metoo + #timesup movement, I was able to leave toxic work environments in a matter of days.

I hope everyone here has their emergency fund or getting it squared away. If not, we’ll go over tips on how to build up that emergency fund, aka F-You Money.

Throughout this FIRE journey, I realized that the key to financial freedom (and really any goal) is to approach it from a holistic angle.

Holistic approach to personal finance: Physical, mental, emotional + ENERGETIC

See, most times when we focus on reaching a goal, we approach it from a physical, mental and or emotional level. We often forget to incorporate an energetic angle.

For instance, say you want to change careers as soon as possible. On a physical level, you might want to start a side hustle, apply for different jobs or simply submit a resignation email.

On the mental level, you might start envisioning yourself in your new career field or start reading up on your new career field. On an emotional level, you might start talking to friends and family or a professional counselor to release some of the emotional anxiety surrounding your career pivot.

What about the missing energetic approach to reaching your financial goal?

There are many simple ways to incorporate an energetic approach to help you reach your career and financial goals faster.

This includes envisioning how you will feel when you reach your career goal. It could also mean acting as if you already achieved your career goal. Basically, getting in touch with how you want to feel and living as if.

The key is aligning your vibrations to where you want to go. When you raise your energetic vibrations, you are aligning your frequency to match the frequency of where you want to be.

Same goes with creating holistic wealth. And let’s just be clear. Wealth mean different things to different people.
